Well first I would suggest doing the tutorials that come with it Then well, I found it much easier to play my own sims, rather than the premade sims, as you kinda get thrown right into a story with them, and you are still trying to learn, so it makes it a little hard. Make your own sim in CAS, check out all the bew features that come with making your sims, maybe make a couple, then build them a little house, so you can check out all the new build mode features, THEN go in and start playing ;D just remember if you need any help, make sure you ask! there is usually soemone on here, no matter what time it is. Good Luck!

do whatever you want to do first! Just mess around with the building tools, and figure out all the cool stuff you can do! or make a sim in create a sim to see all the clothes, accesories etc. Or make a family and see all the realistic and awesome interactions!!!

You know, for me, it was so much easier to play a pre made family first. Like a single person, Don Lothario is single. You can always quit the lot without saving. And then go into CAS/CAF and play in there to get the hang of it. I would then take that family and build a house. I think you'll catch on quickly since you play the original Sims.

Congrats I played the Goth family when I first got the game because they were from the Sims 1 and I recognized them. I couldn't help but jump right in rather than following the tutorials. But just mess around with it it's way different than Sims 1. I do recommend playing with Pleasantview first because everyone is connected in some way and it's a fun neighborhood (I don't play it anymore though because I've had to reset it too many times for weird reasons).

first I would look at the tutorials then create yourself and kind of figure things out.

Congrats, you're a simmer! You should do as gravey says, start with tutorials, because your family won't start well- don't start a game with death.
