Which would be me For those of you who are actually decent at Sim City, could you throw a few tips about running a city around? I know there are some threads about this in the other simcity section, but it is all general with no specifics. So I am asking for a bit of 'specific' information. How to run a city without industry for example? The best way to reduce air pollution? When it is a good idea to add new things in? How to plan for increasing traffic? I hate those messages about "This street is jammed" etc etc, when I have no way to fix it, and they refuse to use the bus/subway/train that is on that street It's my overall worse problem. And yeah, basically stuff like that! I have found its a lot easier with rush hour, but its still hard ;D

A good way to run city without industry, is having a neighborhood city with tons of it.. Its a good idea to add things when you can AFFORD it.. And for the two others, I have no idea!

How to run a city without industry for example?
Larsy is completely right about the industry thing. Put it in a neighbor city! Pollution does not travel between cities. I have a city now with around 144,000 people, a great cash flow, and an overall very good city. But guess what? No industry! Yipee!! All thanks to those dirty, filthy neighbors.
The best way to reduce air pollution?
Build good transportation systems...no industry, and don't forget underground travel! No exhaust can come from subways! Also, you can cheat and get a download to lower pollution on simtropolis.com
When it is a good idea to add new things in?
Only when you need them. Here are some tips I wrote down from the "Making Money" tutorial from the game that answer your question: Add water only when you have a positive cash flow and are ready for wealthier and higher density buildings. Only place the fire fire station after the fist fire, and only add the first police station when crime become a problem.
How to plan for increasing traffic?
Let me be blunt.... TRAFFIC SUCKS!!! I really don't like the transportation part of a running a city. But...there are ups and downs to everything, right? Anyway, the best advice I have for you is to just upgrade as they tell you, and don't be shy to go ahead and take care of a lot of streets in your bigger parts of your town. When the town becomes medium-sized (ready for high density building), I would replace ALL of the streets with roads, and never build with streets again in that city. I have some subways that will be used a lot, and then some only 4%...Yeah, it's annoying considering how expensive it is to make subways. But, hey, you never have to upgrade them! You just build more. Like I said, just do as the transportation dude tells you to do. Streets to roads, roads to one-ways/avenues, and then to highways.
Hope this helps, Gravey! If you need any more tips or more detail, just reply to this post and I'll reply as soon as I can.

For beginners or intermediates who don't know at what population size would make it a medium city (and therefore ready for high density buildings), what are approximate numbers for it for a small, medium, and large sized city (the different sizes you can choose from to put your city).
I also agree on having no water until you get to the medium/high density buildings. It's not needed.
Also, for schools. Put the school in the middle of the neighborhood, so it's radius doesn't have to be so big (which requires less money). Also, only give it enough money to support the kids attending. If only 10 are attending, you don't need to fund it for 100 kids. Increase their budget as needed. Same with any other service that is provided per person. If you only have X population don't fund it for 10X. You can give some leeway for growth so you don't spend every other second messing with the budgets.
Don't be afraid to bulldoze some lots if you need to go from a two lane road to a 4 lane avenue.
That's all I can think of. I'm only a beginner/intermediate with the game anyways.
