I really only play 3 neighborhoods.
Crystal Valley, a custom neighborhood. It has 111 Sims, give or take a few.
Crystal Heights, my legacy neighborhood. It has 106 Sims, give or take a few.
and
Bagwell City Limits, my second prosperity neighborhood. It has 12 Sims currently.

It's not an instant thing. The only people are having problems are the people with a TON of character files. I believe the casual Simmer isn't going to run into the problem caused by the spawning of unnecessary NPC's.
In my recreated legacy neighborhood I have: 504 character files. this includes pets, NPC's, townies, and playables (both alive and dead).
Before NL, the number of character files you could have before major lag was around 800. If I was playing anything prior to NL and had this problem, I could have some problems. But I don't, I have everything.
NL (and I think all future EP's) bumped this number up a LOT. But no one knows to what number. And I believe it is over 1,000. So for the casual player, you can probably get away until the patch comes out. But, if you play a very big neighborhood or one you want to become very big (legacy, prosperity, etc), you probably want to grab that hack until the patch comes out.

Working on generation 10 (J, should be I but I forgot to have the founder have A kids). Getting closer to finishing the legacy!

8 in my Tortall Legacy, but I'm shooting for 27 as it is an alphabet legacy. Who knows how many generations I'll go for after I'm done with the legacy. I might continue on with the family just cause I like them so much.
I'll vote in the poll as soon as I get 11 or more as I'm determined to finish this legacy.
